Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris recently promised that if she ever becomes president, she will implement red flag laws. But what seems to set her apart from many others is the criteria she uses. The Californian believes that seizing guns from white nationalists or any person exhibiting “traits of being a danger to society” could reduce violence in America.
Kamala Harris on Red Flag Laws
“By focusing on confronting these domestic terror threats, we can save lives.” – Kamala Harris
These laws will allow neighbors, relatives, or others to ask a court to temporarily remove someone’s access to guns. Harris believes that this is the right move to stop the person from causing harm. According to her, “[red flag laws] have been particularly effective in preventing suicide”. Therefore, she believes that its use could be extended to prevent “hate-fueled crimes”.
Red flag laws will give communities and law enforcement the power to pledge a judge to confiscate guns from those they believe to be a danger to themselves or society.
“In America, loaded guns should not be a few clicks away for any domestic terrorist” – Kamala Harris
Red Flags Against White Nationalism
Like many Democrats competing for a place on the debate stage, Harris is trying to stand out by championing gun control. Specifically, her idea of disarming white nationalists gives her a more unique place among her opponents. Harris also promised to use $2 billion to help fund federal law enforcement programs “to combat and prosecute domestic extremists”.
Red flag laws are not unique to Kamala Harris, though. In fact, President Trump and many Republican legislators have become more open to the idea of them. The shift comes in light of the recent mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. Twelve states have already passed red flag laws.
